You may think of a workplace injury as an accident at a construction site or a slip and fall in an office. While such accidents certainly cause workplace injuries, the transportation industry is actually the most dangerous for workers.
A UPS truck recently was injured in an accident in Louisville, Kentucky, that killed a 19-year-old passenger in another vehicle. According to WHAS11.com, the UPS truck collided with a Chevy Impala that failed to stop at a stop sign. The person who was killed was riding in the Chevy. The UPS driver and the car’s driver were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Transportation Workplace Injuries
The transportation industry consistently ranks No. 1 in workplace fatalities across the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 1,700 deaths a year are the result of occupational transportation accidents.
Almost two of every five fatal workplace accidents each year occur in the transportation industry.
Anyone who works in the transportation industry is not likely to be surprised by these statistics. Driving can be hazardous under the best of conditions. Licensed commercial drivers are frequently under pressure to make deliveries according to unreasonable deadlines.
Truck drivers may be paid by the mile traveled, adding pressure to push on even when they are exhausted. Even truck drivers who stick to the speed limit, watch the road, and obey all traffic rules and signs are at greater risk for a collision simply by virtue of the number of hours they spend on the roadway. In Kentucky, 82 people died in accidents involving large trucks in 2012. Seventeen of those who died were in large trucks, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Workers’ Comp Benefits
Workers in the transportation industry may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits if they are injured in a motor vehicle collision. A driver who is on the job when an accident occurs may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits regardless of who was at fault in the accident. A personal injury lawsuit may also be warranted.
